I have noticed over the last few months many articles discussing a generation of people who feel a since of entitlement. As I write this the Christmas song playing in the background is “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt, funny! As I read an email sent today by a friend and supporter of Harper I reflect on this “entitlement” generation and wonder have they forgotten? Forgotten the freedom of our nation and that real people died and continue to die to support that freedom?
Then I asked myself the questions; have we forgotten? Do we feel we are entitled? Entitled to help for Harper? Do we feel she is entitled to aid or to a doctor who will address her condition?
After contemplating this a while, I realized what we feel is humbly blessed. Strangers have willingly and faithfully contributed to a Cause they do not really know much about or understand the intricacies of. Businesses have aided in our ability to share Harper’s story with others. Neighbors have stepped in and given support and parents of neighbors have donated their time and talent to support Harper’s Cause. Our church family has rallied around us diligently praying for her healing, along with volunteering their time and resources, while friends have done the same. Extended family has come forward and reminded us that although they may have lay quietly in the background of our lives for a time they have always been there waiting on a call to serve. Her doctors care for her as though she were their own.
We cannot forget of our immediate family. Those individuals we often fail to recognize because they are there supporting us and helping us EVERYDAY. Without them we would not be able to do all that we can to help both our children be the best they can be. Our parents and grandparents, both Dustin’s and mine, have been there from the beginning and will be there until the end. They are the reason we are able to get a break from the daily task of raising children. They provide the best childcare we could ever ask for at the cheapest price you could ever find.
How could we ever begin to thank all these people? We could never pay them enough for the service they continue to provide out of pure unconditional love. What we realize but never really understood is that our parenting job will NEVER end. It will merely change course.
So to answer the questions have we forgotten and are we entitled? NO! We are by the grace of God and devotedness of others, blessed. OVERWHELMINGLY blessed by so many and hope that our appreciation for the blessings we have received from our family, friends, community, doctors and strangers is known by all who meet us. To our children we will instill the lesson of gratitude in hope that they will learn to bless others as we have been so humbly blessed.
